A carved giltwood overmantel mirror with its original mercury glass, foxed and all the better for it.

The frame is carved in running leaf and shell, gilded over gesso on pine. It has been cleaned but not re-gilded: the gold rubbing back to red bole on the high points is original and even across the whole piece.
The glass is the original mercury-silvered plate, foxed through the lower third and slightly hazy at the edges. I would far rather leave it than fit a modern replacement, which always looks too bright inside an old frame.
